The Name Game: Who's That Lady?

The Clues: Mystery woman #2 got her start winning a beauty contest while she was still in her teens...this led to films, around 100 of them! She has co-starred with such legends as Henry Fonda, Burt Lancaster and David Niven.

Gilby recognized Claudia Cardinale who won the "Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia" contest in 1957 and began her movie career in 1958. Mainstream American audiences know her best for her roles in The Pink Panther, The Professionals and Once Upon a Time in the West. She has also appeared in great classic Italian films - Fellini's 8-1/2 , Visconti's Rocco and His Brothers and The Leopard. Claudia currently has two films in post-production, another completed film soon to be released and is filming yet another. She lives in Paris.

The Clues: Mystery woman #1's career spanned a few decades, starting in a golden one and enduring beyond the studio era. She'd had mostly bit parts in minor pictures before her breakout role in a film that launched the career of another star. Some of her best roles were her least glamorous and she was Oscar-nominated for one...

Nicole guessed #1, Ava Gardner...whose breakout performance was in the film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's The Killers (1946), the film that also launched Burt Lancaster's career. Ava got her start in films in 1941 and worked into the 1980s. She earned a Best Actress nomination for Mogambo (1953), and BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for The Night of the Iguana (1964). She was married three times, each husband a top star in his field: Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw...and, of course, Frank Sinatra. Ava Gardner passed away in 1990, at age 67, in London.
