Trivia Time - Part 33

Due to computer problems (hard drive crash), I may not respond as quickly as usual. My wife has kindly loaned me her Mac laptop (normally used to support a NASA mission) to do this post.

Who Am I? When handed a script written expressly for him, this person commented that it was the first script he had ever received that didn't have Gary Cooper's fingerprints on it. "When they can't get Coop, they come for me", he said. Who am I?

#1. What was the name of the film mentioned above?

#2. Who was the director?

#3. In the MGM film, The Heavenly Body, what was the name of the name of the observatory where William Powell worked?

#4. What was the big event that was supposed to be the crowning achievement of William Powell's character's career? Be specific.

#5. In The Heavenly Body, what were the four different ways of drinking vodka?

#6. Aaron Copeland composed the scores for three of this director's films. Name the director and the films.

#7. During World War II, President Roosevelt directed each of the major studios to create a "propaganda" film showing the plight of the Russians under the Nazi regime and depicting them as our friends and allies. Name the films from Warner Brothers, MGM and Samuel Goldwyn.

#8. In which film(s) did Walter Brennan actually sing? Who wrote the lyrics to the song(s)?

#9. In how many movies did Dana Andrews play a bombadier? Name the films.

#10. In the Preston Sturges film Hail the Conquering Hero, which Paramount film was advertised on a billboard at the railway station in the closing sequence?

  1. Hey, there's at least one "chick flick" in there, Dawn!

BTW, did you catch Top Secret?

  2. I don't know the answer to #5, but I will be taking notes when the correct response comes in.

  3. Let rain nor snow nor computer crashes stop Trivia Time at the Cafe! These are toughies this week, Paul. I think #10 is THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK.

  4. Can we have another clue for #1. That's really tough.

  5. This is a wild guess on WHO AM I. I'll say Randolph Scott in RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, directed by Sam Peckinpah.

  6. Rick, you're correct on #10! But as for Who Am I, close, but no cigar.....sorry!

Tom, the only thing I can tell you without giving it away is that he (Who Am I) made more than one film with the director of #1.

    Kim, better luck next week!

  7. What about Alad Ladd in Shane, directed by George Stevens?

  8. Tom, good guess, but it's not Alan Ladd.

  9. How about Jimmy Stewart in ____?____ directed by Anthony Mann?

  10. Here's another guess:

Joel McCrea in Stars in My Crown directed by Jacques Tourneur

  11. Wow, Tom, you got Who Am I!! See, Rick, I told you that you were close!

However, the answers to questions #1 and #2 are not correct.

  12. That was a wild guess. But I can't think of any other directors without cheating.

My next guess would have been Ronald Reagan and Cattle Queen of Montana.

  13. Wait a minute...let me guess...
    The director is Preston Sturges?
    The film: Sullivan's Travels??

  14. Well, it's about time! LOL!

Ronald Reagan and Cattle Queen of Montana!?!? Have you been doing some research of your own on #5??

Seriously, you nailed them....questions #1 and #2, that is.

  15. For some reason I was thinking westerns, but then I realized that you never specified a genre!

  16. Paul, I have not seen "The Heavenly Body", so... this is a wild guess.. Powell Observatory. I do know that "The Heavenly Body", comes on sometime towards the end of May, on TCM. I can not wait to see it.

I did see "Top Secret". That is a very clever/wild movie. It was fun to see a very young Val Kilmer, in his first movie performance.

  17. Just watched The Heavenly Body. I remember Vodka with pepper, Vodka with lemon on the tongue, and vodka with nutmeg. I'm still working to remember the airwarden's recipe, so please don't tell just yet!

  18. #3 It was the Mount Jefferson Obervatory

  19. #4 Professor Whitley has discovered a comet that will be named for him.

  20. Dawn, I'm glad you caught Top Secret! Now you know what I meant by "how silly can you get?"!

Gilby, you got #3 and half of #5. Sorry Dawn!

Gilby, the two correct vodka-drinking methods are lemon on the tongue and pepper. Nutmeg is incorrect.

As to #4, you're getting very warm, but remember, it's an event that we're looking for!

    ReplyDelete
  21. #4)The event is the collision of the comet Powell discovered with the moon.

#5)Lemon peel in vodka & vodka with cinnamon

    ReplyDelete
  22. Way to go, Gilby! You've wiped out #4 and #5!

Did you do a little extra research on #5? If so, share it with Tom.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, I want to drink it the way the airwarden does.
