Your review of Captain Blood is awesome and I enjoyed it. It is one of my favorite Errol Flynn movies and I have even read the book. It has one of my all time favorite sword fights...Flynn and Rathbone on the beach. The dialogue is witty and Oliva as the feisty and lovely Arabella Bishop is just a pleasure to watch. I have always loved the name Arabella. The music, story, script, and actors make this a true classic.Akihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03037507780056714337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5344878851139332715.post-43336523709796369382010-04-11T22:56:06.167-04:002010-04-11T22:56:06.167-04:00Rick, good point about the Korngold Oscar issue. I also agree that Flynn's acting progressed following this film. <br />Toto, Dawn, and Anonymous: glad you liked the review.Kimberly J.M. I really enjoyed watching the very handsome Errol Flynn with the gorgeous Olivia de Havilland. What great chemistry they had in their funny/romantic roles. It is fun to see the first pairings of Errol and Olivia and Basil and Rafael Sabatini and Michael Curtiz and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. They made wonderful movies together! Your description of Olivia de Havilland as portraying "feisty but refined women" is spot-on accurate. Rick, your assessment of Errol Flynn's performance is very apropos. One can tell he was honing his skill in subsequent films. You make a great point about the role reversal in the relationship between Peter and Arabella. It indeed highlights the marvelous chemistry between the two actors--they are truly an adorable pair. I also agree that Olivia is very strong here. Considering this was Errol's first lead role, he is quite good, too--but obviously not as polished as in follow-up films like CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD. Overall, I think CAPTAIN BLOOD lacks the breathless pace of other Flynn-Curtiz movies, but Sabatini weaves a highly entertaining tale (as always). Interestingly, Korngold's Oscar nomination was a write-in. He refused to take credit for composing the score, because he had to use some Liszt music because of time constraints. I think the credit reads some like "musical arrangements by" although almost all the score was done by Korngold.Rick29https://www.blogger.com/profile/08358116647815569722noreply@blogger.com
