"Les Parapluies" sounds more like something I would enjoy.toto2https://www.blogger.com/profile/09652682900471649463noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5344878851139332715.post-55634970436358022042010-11-07T13:59:24.461-05:002010-11-07T13:59:24.461-05:00Kim...this is a Renoir I haven't seen. LOL. Anyway, stop saying L'Age D'Or was a good French film that was banned!!! LOL! Can't stand that Bunuel vehicle.

Sark, you are right about the ending. I'm glad Simon's character got away with murder! Glad you liked the review.

Becky, you can watch La Chienne on YouTube for free...or at least until they take it down.

Rick, the marionette opening is SO French and, as you said, so in tune with Renoir's life & theatre fascination. Glad to help the Cafe in an area that I know a lot about (unlike horror films, yuck!).Kimberly J.M. It's not among Renoir's best, but it's always interesting and it's nice to Simon play a different role (say, in comparison to BOUDU SAVED FROM DROWNING). Stylistically, it's fascinating to see the growing emergence of the long takes and Renoir's theme of life & theatre (if I recall, even the introduction is done by a puppet in a little theatre). As Sark says, it's fun to see how Fritz Lang avoided the wrath of the Hays Code in his U.S. remake SCARLET STREET, but remained true to his vision. Of note, Lang also remade Renoir's LA BETE HUMAINE as HUMAN DESIRE. I like both of those better than LA CHIENNE/SCARLET STREET, but they are all must-see movies. Kim, you've gotten our Focus on Foreign Films off to a strong start with your reviews this week.Rick29https://www.blogger.com/profile/08358116647815569722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5344878851139332715.post-45040050876181583622010-11-06T10:43:36.643-04:002010-11-06T10:43:36.643-04:00Good post, Kim. I couldn't help but remember Of Human Bondage, certainly different in many ways, but still the story of an innocent obsessed with a deceitful chienne! I didn't know Scarlet Street was its remake. I'd like to see the original.ClassicBeckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03591715859057540467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5344878851139332715.post-86698376474856010292010-11-06T07:44:52.844-04:002010-11-06T07:44:52.844-04:00Kim, in my comment to Rick's review of THE RUL...Kim, in my comment to Rick's review of THE RULES OF THE GAME, I said I'd only seen a couple of Renoir's movies. This is one of them! I really like this film, and I think the ending is fascinating and, though this may be morbid, a bit of a relief. I've also seen SCARLET STREET. Fritz Lang did a superb job with the ending under the watchful eye of the Hays Code, but Renoir's film has more resonance. Entertaining and well written review, Kim!sarkoffagushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00922698736476674377noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5344878851139332715.post-24827225504693688082010-11-06T04:25:18.927-04:002010-11-06T04:25:18.927-04:00great post, kim..and LA CHIENNE does translate as ...great post, kim..and LA CHIENNE does translate as "the bitch"..an oft told story but with a very FRENCH feel and ambiance..nasty and scandalous is right...all the best films were banned in some way or other..L'AGE D'OR comes to mind..but this is a truthful observant film and an homage to the early french films of the 30s..doctom666 from TCM!!!doctor sabelotodohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17753057330165133638noreply@blogger.com
