Sjostrom was an idol of Bergman, so it is great that he had the opportunity to direct one of his directorial idols. Interestingly enough the scene where a horse-drawn carriage transports a coffin with the professor’s lifeless body inside was homage to Sjostrom's Korkarlen (The Phantom Carriage). I really enjoy watching Ingrid Thulin in this. Great pick for this month.Kimberly J.M. You make an excellent point in describing it as an optimistic experience. That's what I like about WILD STRAWBERRIES and the atypical (for Bergman) SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT. Incidentally, these films shares several thematic similarities and hinge on one or more characters revisiting relationships of the past. I do admire some of Bergman's bleak films, too, particularly THE VIRGIN SPRING and THE SEVENTH SEAL. But, for me, much of his later work became mired in descents into depression. By the way, it's interesting that both Andersson and von Sydow became international stars, though von Sydow certainly had a longer career in English-language films.Rick29https://www.blogger.com/profile/08358116647815569722noreply@blogger.com
