Movie-TV Connection Game (August 2018)

Tanya Roberts and Cloris Leachman.
Welcome to the August 2018 edition of our most popular regular feature! You will be given a pair or trio of films or performers, your task is to find the common connection. It could be anything--two stars who acted in the same movie, two movies that share a common theme, etc. As always, don't answer all the questions so others can play, too. There is a single best answer for each question.

1.  Cate Blanchett and Bette Davis.

2.  Tom Conway and Joan Fontaine.

3.  The TV series The Outer Limits and the movie Psycho.

4.  Gary Cooper and Marty Robbins.

5.  William Conrad and Timothy Hutton.

6.  Tanya Roberts and Cloris Leachman.

7.  Cary Grant and Jack Lemmon.

8.  The film Mary Poppins and the TV series The Beverly Hillbillies.

9.  Burt Lancaster and Lloyd Bridges.

10. Gene Barry and Patrick Macnee.

11.  Kris Kristofferson and Clint Eastwood.

12. George Peppard and Helen Hayes.

13. Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee. (There are multiple correct answers!)

14. Perry Mason and Death Takes a Holiday.  (This one is a bit tricky!)

15. James Stewart and Van Johnson.

  1. Cate and Bette both played Queen Elizabeth the first.

Tom Conway and Joan Fontaine both starred alongside Tom's brother George Sanders? (Joan in Rebecca, and Tom in The Falcon film series).

  2. #5. William Conrad played Nero Wolfe in the early 1980s TV series and Tim Hutton played Nero's legman Archie Goodwin in the early 2000s A Nero Wolfe Mystery.

#10. Could it be the natty attire of cane and derby hat that ties together Bat Masterson and John Steed?

#12. Stars of NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie series Banacek and The Snoop Sisters.

  3. Wait! I'm back. I thought I would be all day figuring out tricky #14, but it just came to me. Monte Markham! He played Perry in The New Perry Mason and was in the TV movie remake of Death Takes a Holiday.

    3. Numbers 10 and 14 were my favorites today. Well done!

  4. 4. The movie The Hanging Tree. Cooper was the star and Marty Robbins sang the title song.

    7. They both worked with Tony Curtis, Grant in Operation Petticoat and Lemmon in Some Like It Hot (where Curtis imitated Grant).

    13. Karloff and Lee both played The Mummy and the Frankenstein Monster. They also appeared together in Corridors Of Blood. I'm sure there are plenty of other connections.

    1. All your answers are correct and special kudos for getting #9! There's also a literary (sort of) connection between Joan and Tom. Burt and Lloyd share another connection...of the occupation kind.

  8. There are still answers awaiting for 2, 3, 9, and 11.

  9. 2. Well, Conway and Fontaine both starred in episodes of Alfred Hitchcock's TV series (half-hour and hour versions, respectively), and both were featured in sub-related films, Tom in "The Atomic Submarine" and Joan in "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea". Success?
As for #3, Joseph Stefano wrote the screenplay for Hitch's "Psycho" and was a writer/producer for "The Outer Limits" (including my favorite episode, The Zanti Misfits).

    1. Very well done with Joseph Stefano. "Zanti Misfits" is awesome...my third favorite. Did a post on my top 5 several years ago: https://www.classicfilmtvcafe.com/2012/08/the-five-best-outer-limits-episodes.html. That's another great connection with Joan and Tom...but also see below.

  15. I'll try one last connection for 11: Both played truck drivers, Eastwood in Every Which Way But Loose and Kristofferson in Convoy.

    1. Yes, Jerome, truckers is what I was going for...but who could have imagined that Clint and Kris had so much in common? Frankly, I'm now surprised Clint wasn't married to Rita Coolidge, too....
