The Snubbed By the Oscars Awards - Your Vote Counts!

Stanwyck in Double Indemnity.
With the Academy Awards just around the corner, the Cafe's staff thought it'd be a good time to recognize some of the finest classic movie performers who never won an Oscar.

It's hard to believe that acclaimed actresses such as Barbara Stanwyck, Deborah Kerr, and Greta Garbo were nominated multiple times--and yet never won a competitive Academy Award (we're excluding honorary Oscars). It's even more amazing that Vincent Price, Marilyn Monroe, Eli Wallach, and Margaret Hamilton were never nominated.

Vincent Price in Laura.
So, we've taken twenty performers snubbed by the Oscars and placed them in categories based on one of their most famous performances. Yes, we could have easily chosen other worthy stars or selected performances from other films. But, hey, these are our Snubbed By the Oscars Awards!

But you get the chance to determine the winner in each category. We'd love to read any comments, but please visit our on-line poll to cast your official votes.

Click here to cast your votes (one for each of the four categories). Feel feel to share the poll's link. We will reveal the winners on February 24th.

  1. Would have chosen Clifton Webb in Laura instead of Vincent Price, but good list overall :)

  3. How could you make me choose between Angela Lansbury and Thelma Ritter? I feel so guilty now about not choosing the other one!

  4. I would put Marilyn up for the Oscar for BUS STOP or THE MISFITS. I would also have picked THE MISFITS for Thelma Ritter. Also Miss Ritter was great in THE MATING SEASON.

  5. I remember reading in a book where the author picked ANDY GRIFFITH as the one that he thought should have won the Oscar for A FACE IN THE CROWD which was the first movie that Andy did.

  6. One actor that I liked that never got an Oscar nom was GLENN FORD who was good at drama, comedy and westerns. His son contacted different people trying to get his dad a special award when Glenn was elderly. One of them said they never heard of Glenn Ford.

  7. This is seriously impossible. But as an example I chose Greenstreet over Sellers for Supporting Actor, and don't feel at all certain about it. And Stanwyck, only because I always loved her crooked sexy nose. I call this the Scientific Method.

"I'd like to thank the Academy for the neat trophy . . ."

    1. I always thought Vincent Price was ignored. He was delightful in CHAMPAGNE FOR CAESAR and in THEATRE OF BLOOD.

  8. I agree. A great list. The supporting categories are toughest. Agnes Moorhead or Edward G. Robinson in anything deserves a vote.

  9. There was a movie HARLOW with CARROLL BAKER. It was not a critically acclaimed movie but there were great performances in it. Miss Baker was nominated for BABY DOLL but not for any other movies. ANGELA LANSBURY played MAMA JEAN, the mother of Harlow. Also Red Buttons, Martin Balsam, and Mike Connors were in it. Peter Lawford was in it as Paul Bern, the husband of Harlow. Mr. Lawford was an underrated actor and I think he gave a great performance.

  10. Great idea Rick. These actors baffles the mind as snubs, though my pick for Garbo would have been Camille. And as mentioned - the all time snub was of Andy Griffith in The Face in the Crowd.

    1. Thank you for mentioning ANDY GRIFFITH in A FACE IN THE CROWD that I earlier stated in my post.

  11. I want to add to my post about HARLOW starring CARROLL BAKER. It got nominated for one award. RED BUTTONS got a Golden Globe nom for supporting actor. A lot of times I would rather read (in books) about the Golden Globes than the Oscars because I find it more interesting. Plus they have TV awards.

  12. Louise Latham was a great character actress. She gave a unique performance as the mother in Marnie, the movie starring Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery and directed by THE MASTER OF SUSPENSE ALFRED HITCHCOCK. She was also in the underrated western FIRECREEK starring James Stewart. It also had Henry Fonda, Jack Elam, Gary Lockwood, Morgan Woodward, James Best, Dean Jagger and Ed Begley, Besides Miss Latham there were Barbara Luna, Inger Stevens, Jacqueline Scott and Brooke Bundy, It is rare to have several women in a western. Regarding director Hitchcock I don't believe that he ever won an Oscar.

  13. I just thought of the classic DISNEY movies. I know HAYLEY MILLS got a special award for POLLYANNA. But a lot of the other movies were great too. I don't think the Academy ever recognized any of them. DOROTHY MCGUIRE,TOMMY KIRK, AND KEVIN CORCORAN in OLD YELLER, BRIAN KEITH, MAUREEN OHARA, and UNA MERKEL in THE PARENT TRAP and several including AGNES MOOREHEAD in POLLYANNA. Also western performers were almost always left out.

  14. I wonder what anyone thinks about the blonde sex symbols that were not nominated for Oscars. Which ones should have won or at least been nominated? Marilyn Monroe who is on the list. Tuesday Weld, a nominee. Carroll Baker. also a nominee.Kim Novak, Stella Stevens. Lana Turner, a nominee for Peyton Place. I thought she was great in THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL with Kirk Douglas. She was also in IMITATION OF LIFE with SANDRA DEE. Miss Dee was not a sex symbol but she was a very good actress and one of the most popular girls next door. Also there was CONNIE STEVENS. Any thoughts on this topic?

    1. What happened to the post that said Kim Novak for VERTIGO and Lana Turner for THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE? There were 20 POSTS then it went down to 19.

  15. Lana was a nominee for Peyton Place.

  16. Speaking of blondes what about Doris Day? She was a nominee for Pillow Talk but what about her dramatic work? For example Midnight Lace. For musical performers there was Betty Grable in Mother Wore Tights which was a great movie. I read that Miss Grable said that it was her favorite movie that she was in.

  18. Some Oscar nominees are Jeanne Crain, Janet Leigh and Gena Rowlands. Some other good performers are June Allyson and Vera Miles. Also Joan Blondell, Jeanette Nolan, and Ann Sothern. Ann received a nom for her last movie THE WHALES OF AUGUST which starred BETTE DAVIS and LILLIAN GISH. MISS LILLIAN GISH was nominated for one or two Oscars, I believe, for supporting actress but it is surprising that she never won.

  19. I just noticed that of all the people on the list only two are still living. Angela Lansbury who is 93 and Kirk Douglas who is 102.

  23. Some people may think Im kidding but ELVIS PRESLEY was a good and underrated actor. His serious movies were LOVE ME TENDER, LOVING YOU, JAILHOUSE ROCK, KING CREOLE, FLAMING STAR and WILD IN THE COUNTRY. He worked with a lot of good actors and held his own. There were Dean Jagger, Wendell Corey, John McIntire, and Walter Matthau. He did two later movies with Arthur OConnell. I think it would have been a good idea for the studio to pair him with Clark Gable. Gable could have played his uncle, father or a father figure. Elvis was a good enough actor to do that. The studio could have had a field day with the publicity. It could have been FOR THE FIRST TIME TOGETHER, THE KING OF HOLLYWOOD AND THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL,

    1. You're getting a little off-topic here, as your comment doesn't pertain to any of the nominees and is essentially about Elvis's career.

  24. Excuse me but I earlier mentioned HARLOW with CARROLL BAKER,etc. I mentioned that PETER LAWFORD was an underrated actor. I also mentioned ANDY GRIFFITH in an earlier post for A FACE IN THE CROWD. I didn't get any comments about them not being on topic

    1. Suggesting someone deserved a nomination is fine. By off-topic, I meant including all the additional info on Elvis Presley. It’s the same for comments about who starred with whom. That info is available on many other sites.
